Patrick, Freya, è un onore
ospitarvi sulle pagine oscure di ROSA SELVAGGIA!
La vostra recente esibizione al londinese Camden Underworld
è stato un evento unico, una serata che non scorderemo
mai, proprio come tutto fosse accaduto pochi minuti fa! Quando
partoriste l’idea di proporre live il concept di “Fruits”
a distanza di ben 22 anni dal concepimento dell’opera originale?
PL: Ho ristampato il cd originale di “Fruits of Yggdrasil”
tramite la Hauruck!/Tesco l’anno scorso, terminando così
definitivamente l’attività commerciale riguardante
il progetto “Fruits”. Nel 1987/88 quando produssi il vinile
originale fummo molto sfortunati con la società distributrice,
una famosa distro underground ma anche “major”. Ora che sono
prossimo ai miei 50 anni era giunto il momento di trasformare
quelle esperienze negative in qualcosa di finalmente buono.
Freya fu subito d’accordo, ma l’ostacolo maggiore era ricreare
nuovamente tutto quell’apparato musicale dopo tutti quegli
anni. Attraverso una combinazione di frammenti originali dell’opera
e nuove aggiunte di tracce strumentali son riuscito a completare
il lavoro solo 2 settimane prima dello show! Sono convinto
che suoni anche un po’ meglio dell’originale. Freya era davvero
preoccupata per la sua voce, siamo invecchiati entrambi e
la voce cambia negli anni, è naturale. Fortunatamente
la sua voce ha conservato un bel timbro caratteristico, e
ha fatto un’ottima figura on stage. Sono soddisfatto del mio
lavoro e di come l’evento sia riuscito bene. E’ una vergogna
che non siamo purtroppo riusciti a trovare una location speciale
per la serata, ma davvero non ci è stato possibile.
FA: Quando Patrick mi parlò del progetto all’inizio
non ero molto propensa. Pensavo che la mia voce fosse ormai
andata a causa dell’età e dei 20 anni di fumo! Sono
rimasta sorpresa invece di come la mia voce abbia resistito,
ed ora ho acquistato fiducia anche per eventuali future nuove
performances.
Ero in prima fila, attaccato al
palco: siete soddisfatti della risposta da parte del pubblico?
Ricordo che l’atmosfera del club era assai simile a quella
di un vero “rituale”!
PL: Sì, l’audience è stata grande! Corretta
ed educata. Ricordo una grande atmosfera on stage ai bei tempi,
così contavo che qualcuno tra il pubblico sentisse
una sorta di ponte col passato. Stare sul palco presenta sempre
delle criticità, i monitors sai…ecc ecc., ma prima
dell’inizio del concerto fummo tutti compatti: avremmo proseguito
senza curarci di qualsiasi problema tecnico fosse sorto.
FA: Oh si, ho davvero apprezzato l’audience. Personalmente
non avevo nemmeno lo spazio per muovermi adeguatamente durante
l’invocazione delle divinità, la prossima volta avrò
bisogno di un “microfono 360”, tipo quelli televisivi.
Freya, sei una delle maggiori
conoscitrici ed esperte di paganesimo norreno, ma anche una
pittrice, ed una musicista.
FA: beh non proprio una musicista, canto solamente, ma non
so suonare alcun strumento.
Sei olandese, e se non erro vivi
in Spagna in questi ultimi tempi vero?
FA: Si, e mi trovo malissimo, sto cercando con tutte le mie
forze di rientrare a Londra definitivamente.
Patrick, so che a malapena hai
avuto la possibilità di provare, ma alla fine la tua
parte elettronica ed alle percussioni é venuta fuori
alla grande. Alcuni frangenti davano davvero l’idea di una
libera
e spontanea improvvisazione del “Chaos”!
PL: Io, Freya, Phil e Steve ci trovammo per provare un paio
d’ore il giovedì precedente lo show. Abbiamo appena
suonato le tracce-base e Freya ha recitato una volta i testi
ma addirittura senza un microfono. E questo è stato
tutto! Ho dovuto assolutamente improvvisare, a tratti, durante
lo show. In realtà LOKI ha provato brevemente con me
prima del concerto. Pensa che proprio il giorno precedente
la mia vecchia tastiera del 1980, che usavo per alcune parti
del disco, ha pensato bene di morire…! Così alle 7
del mattino, il sabato della serata, sono andato fuori Londra
in cerca di una nuova tastiera per suonare la sera. Purtroppo
il suono non rendeva perfettamente on stage, non l’avevo mai
utilizzata prima di allora, così ho omesso di suonare
qualche traccia rispetto a quanto avevo preparato. Per quanto
riguarda le percussioni, non è stato un problema improvvisare
tutto o quasi durante lo show, spesso i lives si rivelano
un’ottima occasione per sperimentare. Ogni volta che faccio
lo “Stukas” show ad esempio,viene fuori in maniera sempre
un po’ differente dalla precedente. Non provo mai prima. Se
prima scrivo la musica devo essere in grado di sapere cosa
fare on stage, la perfezione è una noia!
Raccontaci delle tue recenti attività,
stai scrivendo qualche nuovo testo sulle Rune e sui misteri
del Nord? Quale – tra i tuoi vecchi testi – consiglieresti
ad un profano per iniziare il suo percorso nel mondo di misteri
nordici?
FA: No, ultimamente sto esplorando altri rami, per quanto
correlati, della conoscenza. In particolare, dopo aver rifiutato
l’idea per oltre 20 anni, sto riscontrando che la tecnologia
e la spiritualità di Voudon collimano ottimamente con
le Rune. Sto studiando il cosiddetto “percorso della mano
sinistra”, e mi sto soffermando soprattutto su Evola recentemente.
Sei ancora in contatto con i musicisti
inglesi con cui collaborasti, come D.Tibet e Ian Read?
FA: No, anche se entrambi sono tra i miei contatti in Myspace.
Freya, mia moglie si interessa
di astrologia e divinazione con i tarocchi, usi anche le Rune
per scopi divinatori?
FA: Si, faccio anche delle letture via Internet.
Patrick, ho letto sulla pagina
Myspace di “Fruits” che avete saltato erroneamente una parte
della gig tra Freya e Steve Wilson all’Underworld. Ovviamente
non ce ne siamo nemmeno accorti, e ciò non ha compromesso
minimamente lo show, ma siamo curiosi, cosa avrebbero dovuto
fare in quel frangente?
PL: Si, parte del “rituale” tra Freya e Steve è stato
saltato perché sia io che Freya abbiamo sbagliato on
stage, ma ci aspettavamo qualcosa del genere sarebbe capitato
prima o poi. Questo capita sia nelle performances musicali
che nei rituali magici, e non vi è nulla di cui stupirsi.
Lo spirit della performance è la cosa fondamentale.
Patrick,
Freya: avete in programma qualche altra apparizione come FRUITS
OF YGGDRASIL da qualche parte in Europa? Mi parlavate di qualche
idea sull’Italia…!
PL: Vorremmo fare un paio di concerti, forse in Germania ed
in Italia. Non sarà una vera e propria performance
di FRUITS OF YGGDRASIL, ma alcune tracce saranno proposte,
ovviamente con del nuovo materiale. Inoltre l’idea è
quella di proporre anche parte del materiale del mio progetto
solista, sia vecchio che nuovo. Sarà uno show tra vecchi
amici insomma . Alla “Stukas” gig italiana (lo show di Prato
al Siddharta – n.d.r.) la vostra audience mi è stata
molto vicina e davvero amichevole, sono rimasto addirittura
sorpreso onestamente. Voglio approfittare per raccontarti
che una giovane mi chiese il permesso di fare una cover di
“Mithras” dal vecchio album “Seething” di Mother Destruction.
Le dissi che per me era ok, ma non ero io l’autore dei testi,
e non potevo dare l’autorizzazione in quanto avevo solo suonato
la musica su quel brano. Spero abbia capito, ero piuttosto
assordato dopo lo show e non riuscivo a comprendere cosa la
gente mi diceva! Spero legga questo articolo, e sappia così
che non era mia intenzione essere maleducato o scontroso.
FA: Si certo, mi piacerebbe. Ho anche fatto un workshop sulle
Rune l’anno passato a Roma, mi è davvero piaciuto!
Lo rifarei volentieri. Quanto al discorso di concerti in Italia,
beh non dipende da me sfortunatamente, ma se ci sarà
l’occasione io ci sto!
Infine una curiosità: qualcuno
ha trasmesso una collection di vecchie musiche (forse patriottiche?)
prima dello show: sapete di che si trattava?
PL: Onestamente ti dirò che mi sono annoiato parecchio
con la musica nel pre-show. Avevamo in programma di avere
una cantante di opera francese che avrebbe dovuto muoversi
in mezzo al pubblico cantando degli oscuri brani operistici
ma alla fine non saremmo stati nei tempi strettissimi della
scaletta.

Patrick,
Freya: it’s a true honor to host you on the obscure pages
of our web-zine ROSA SELVAGGIA!
Your recent exhibition at the
Camden Underworld was a unique event, a night we’ll remember
forever, as everything was happened just a few minutes ago!
When did you come out with the idea of performing live the
“Fruits” show 22 years after the original work?
PL: I re released the original album on CD via Hauruck!/ Tesco
last year as a way to finish past business regarding the whole
Fruits project. During 1987/88 when I released the original
Vinyl LP we had very bad luck with the distribution company
, a very well known sub/major distributor. I think that now
I am nearly 50 years old I wanted to make good something positive
out of the bad things that had happened. Freya agreed to the
idea but my biggest problem was putting the music together
again after all these yea
rs.
Through a combination of sampling little pieces from the original
music and adding some other instruments I managed to complete
the tracks only a couple of weeks before the show. In fact
I think it sounds a little better than the original. Freya
was very worried about her voice as we have both aged and
ones voice changes over the years , this is normal. However
her voice has great character and she looked great onstage.
I think it worked very well and I am very happy with the event.
Its a shame that we could not have found a special venue but
that just was not possible.
FA: Well, Patrick suggested it to me and I was not keen at
all. I assumed that my voice was gone due to old Age and twenty
years of smoking pot.
I was pleasantly surprised how well my voice stood up to it
and have gained my confidence to do more performances.
I was in the first raw, close
to the stage: did you appreciate the audience feedback? I
find the atmosphere in the club was so similar to a true Ritual!
PL: Yes the audience behaved very well ! Very polite and understanding.
I could feel a good atmosphere at times on stage so I hope
that some people in the audience also felt a connection. Being
on stage is a little difficult as always with monitors etc.,
but we agreed before the show that we would continue, no matter
what problems arose.
FA: Oh yes, I sure appreciate that.
That was the idea, I just did not have any space to turn and
invoke the Quaters properly next time I have to have a 360
microphone as the use on TV.
Patrick,
I know you hardly had the chance to rehearse, but your work
at the percussions and electronics resulted really impressive!
Some fragments sounded like a sort of free-improvised representation
of chaos…!
PL: Freya, Phil , Steve and I met at a rehearsal space for
2 - 3 hours on the Thursday before the show. We just played
the backing tracks on CD and Freya went through the text one
time but without a microphone. That was all. I just had to
improvise something on the night. Actually LOKI had a little
play with me before the show. Just one day before, my old
1980's keyboard , which I used for some sounds on the album,
well it died and would not work at all! So at 7 am on the
day of the concert I had to drive out of London and find a
keyboard so I could play something on stage. Sadly the sounds
would not balance onstage as I had never used this machine
before. So I played a little less than I had planned. As for
the drums and other things , I just had to improvise it no
problem. Quite often live shows are a good place to experiment.
Each time I have done the Stukas show it has been a little
different as I learn the material. I never rehearse. If I
write the music then I should know what to do. Perfection
is boring.
Freya,
you’re one of the most important experts in Norse paganism,
but also a painter, and - last but not least - a musician.
FA: No I am not a musician I just do vocals, I do not play
any instruments.
You were born in Holland, and
if I’m not wrong, you’re living in Spain now.
FA: Yes, and it's awful, I am trying very hard to get back
to London permanently.
Tell us something about your recent
activities, are you writing some new books about Runes and
Northern mysteries? Which among your past publications would
you recommend to start a path into the world of northern mysteries?
FA: No, I am investigating other but related branches of gnosis.
I particular I find again, after resisting the idea for over
20 years, that the technology as well as the spirituality
of Voudon combines very well with the Runes. I am studying
what's known as 'the left hand path', I especially focus on
Julius Evola at the moment.
Are you still in touch with other
british musicians you worked with, like D. Tibet or Ian Read?
FA: No, but I think both of them are friends on Myspace.
Freya, my wife is into astrology
and Tarots divination…Do you use to practice the Runes for
divination aims?
FA: Yes, I do readings via the Internet
Patrick, I read on the Fruits Myspace Page that a part of
the performance between Steve Wilson and Freya was missed
out. Obviously anyone realized it, and this little mistake
didn’t compromise the outcome of the show! But we’re curious…let
us know what they should have done in that fragment…
PL: Part of the Ritual text between Freya and Phil was missed
out as both Freya and I both made mistakes but we knew this
would happen at some point. This normally happens in both
music and magick ritual circles and is nothing to worry about.
The intent is the most important thing.
Patrick, Freya: are you planning any future show as FRUITS
OF YGGDRASIL somewhere in Europe? You told me you were thinking
about something in Italy… !
PL: We are planning to do a couple of concerts perhaps in
Germany and Italy. It will not be the Fruits of Yggdrasil
performance but some of the tracks will be included of course
together with some new material. The plan is also that I will
perform as well with my normal solo project , old and new
material. So it will be an old folks performance :)) At the
Stukas show in Italy (N.d.r: the Italian 6Comm show in Prato
at Siddharta Club), the Italian audience were so warm and
everyone so friendly , I was surprised to be honest. I must
mention here that there was a young lady who was asking me
a question, she wanted to do a cover version of Mithras from
the old MD album Seething. I told her that it was fine with
me but I did not write the text and could not give permission
as I only played the music for this track. I hope she understood
as I was quite deaf after the show and could not hear what
people were saying to me. I hope she reads this and does not
think I was being ignorant or rude.
FA: Yes, please, if I am asked I will do it. I have also done
a cracking rune workshop in Rome last year and I LOVED it.
I would love to do more of them.
About Italy, well, it's not down to me unfortunately. But
I am game if you are!
And last, a curiosisty: someone
played a majestic collection of old (maybe patriotic?) tunes
before the show: any chance to know the title of that cd?!
PL: I was getting pretty annoyed by the music to be honest.
We did plan to have a French female opera singer to walk around
the audience singing some pretty dark opera pieces but in
the end we did not have the time as the schedule is very strict
at the venue.
