M/B'06: Dopo un assedio durato qualche mese sono finalmente riuscito ad ottenere questa preziosissima intervista da Peter Bjärgö, assistito dalla sua meravigliosa e simpaticissima moglie Cecilia: Peter è un personaggio che ho avuto la fortuna di conoscere di persona e che ho trovato estremamente simpatico e amichevole, ma allo stesso tempo schivo ed estremamente selettivo nei rapporti umani (egli stesso mi dice di avere 3 o 4 amici al massimo). Come potete immaginare ne è uscita fin dall'inizio un'intervista davvero singolare...

Ia: Peter non può fare l'intervista, quindi parlerà Ia (Cecilia Bjärgö, nda). Peter mi darà una mano dietro le quinte ;)

Non ho mai visto un concerto di Sophia e pensavo che non ne avrei mai avuta l'occasione, ma questo progetto, uno dei più importanti nella scena martial industrial, è tornato! Cos'è successo? Puoi tracciare una breve storia della band?
Ia: Beh, ne abbiamo parlato l'anno scorso, ci mancava il progetto Sophia. Dopo "Deconstruction of the World" Peter decise che Sophia doveva essere messo a dormire, se non per sempre, sicuramente per un lungo periodo. I molti cambiamenti nella nostra vita privata condussero a questa decisione, dal momento in cui Arcana inizio a prenderci molto tempo, per non parlare del progetto Tyrant (la band black metal di Peter) ma soprattutto, nostra figlia Vendela. Quando decidemmo di ripartire con Sophia, Peter riprese Per Åhlund nel gruppo. Peter è stato parte di Sophia sin dall'inizio, e lui ha pensato che sarebbe stato fantastico lavorare di nuovo assieme. E quindi siamo qui che stiamo già lavorando ad un nuovo album. Abbiamo suonato il nostro primo concerto a Utrecht in Olanda al Summer Darkness quest'anno, ed è stato fantastico tornare sul palco a fare la nostra musica.

Se ho ben capito ristamperete tutti i vostri precedenti lavori su Cyclic Law: ce n'è uno tra questi che amate particolarmente? Puoi descrivere sinteticamente il progetto Sophia in modo da dare un'idea alla gente che non lo con osce?
Il primo album "Sigillum Militum" è stato prodotto con l'intenzione di usare le canzoni durante concerti dal vivo. Quando Peter più tardi fece "Herbstwerk" e il mini "Seduction of Madness", le canzoni contenevano ancora le percussioni marziali e le campionature orchestrali. Dopo questo Peter sentì che era giunto il momento di sviluppare il progetto, allo stesso modo in cui stabilì di farlo con gli Arcana. L'album "Spite" e l'EP "Death, dumb and blind" è stato fatto con un suono più ruvido, più “punk”. L'ultimo album infine, "Deconstruction of the world", aveva invece un suono che traeva influenza da tutti gli album precedenti. Per sceglierne uno Peter direbbe "Spite", ma gli piace molto anche "Seduction of madness". Io direi invece "Herbstwerk", in cui la parte orchestrale è fantastica, ma adoro anche l'EP "Death, dumb and blind".

Avete un nuovo album in preparazione? Puoi rivelarci qualcosa riguardo al futuro di Sophia?
Il prossimo album sarà più duro e caotico, o almeno le canzoni sono costruite seguendo quest'idea. Abbiamo creato le canzoni insieme a molti amici ed il loro contributo sarà aggiunto. Per ora non diremo altro, perché molte cose possono accadere ;)

Che ne pensi della scena Industrial di fine anni 70 e dei cambiamenti occorsi in questi 40 anni? Cos'è cambiato secondo te?
Principalmente, per paragonare gli anni 70 ad oggi, dobbiamo menzionare l'introduzione dei campionamenti. La scena industriale è esplosa in molte direzioni, con sotto-generi in tutte le direzioni. Amiamo il suono "old industrial" e ascoltiamo vecchi gruppi come i primi Swans e i Suicide. Entrambe sono band davvero diverse, ma egualmente buone a modo loro.

Direi che Sophia è solo una faccia di molti altri progetti e collaborazioni: tra queste ultime ci sono progetti fondamentali come Karjalan Sissit e In Slaughter Natives: puoi darci un'idea di quanto importante è stato ognuno di loro (o qualcuno che ho scordato) e la gente con cui avete lavorato, Markus Pesonen and Jouni Havukainen?
"In Slaughter Natives" è stata la prima grande influenza per Peter quando iniziò il progetto Sophia. Puoi sentirlo nei primi lavori e nello stile aspro di tutti gli album. Non c'è da meravigliarsi che paragoni i Karjalan Sissit con Sophia. Make Pesonen e Peter lavorano insieme in studio quando registrano i lavori di KS.

Cosa ci puoi dire riguardo al progetto che porta il tuo nome? Puoi parlarcene? Qual è la ragione che ti ha spinto ad iniziarlo?
Peter Bjärgö come progetto solista è iniziato nello stesso modo di Sophia. Arcana è un progetto che Peter vuole gestire in una maniera differente, anche se sviluppa il suono su tutti gli album. Le canzoni per i progetti solista di Peter sono più profondi ed intimistici. Egli rivela maggiormente i suoi pensieri oscuri e la sua visione su differenti temi che non può portare in Arcana. Molta gente trova che sia la stessa cosa, ma credimi: non lo è. Forse sono di parte, in quanto moglie di Peter, ma sento grandi differenze.

Che cosa ci dici di Arcana? Ci dobbiamo aspettare un nuovo lavoro?Si, incideremo un nuovo album il prossimo anno. Tutte le canzoni sono pressoché pronte, rimangono solo le parti vocali e piccole correzioni. Ma è lontano dall'essere al 100% pronto, quindi trattenete il fiato. Sta arrivando;)

Hai anche molti progetti nel genere metal/hardcore. Quanto sei dentro al black metal ed al metal in generale? Cosa pensi della moderna scena black metal e del periodo Burzum-Mayhem?
Peter si è interessato alla scena metal già dalla prima infanzia (ed anche io). Black metal non è qualcosa che ascoltiamo quotidianamente, ma qualche volta finiamo per ascoltare qualche vecchio gruppo tipo Bathory e Dark Throne. Qualcosa della nuova generazione è ok, ma l'immagine intorno a queste band tende a ridicolizzarne la musica. Per certi versi quello che ci impedisce di ascoltarne la musica. Quando Peter è stato nel tour europeo con i Gorgoroth (Peter suonava coi Tyrant come band di supporto), Gahl fece il soundcheck senza corpse paint. Quello fu molto più malvagio e vero, che lo show davanti al pubblico. Forse questo non ci farà smettere di ascoltare questo genere di musica, ma non riusciamo a provare più grande interesse nella musica. Speriamo che cambi, perché il metal è ancora nei nostri cuori =)

Quanto il posto dove vivi influenza i tuoi lavori?
Direi molto, perché so che Peter spesso passeggia facendo foto, esplorando i dintorni e ricevendone una certa influenza. E abbiamo un sacco di amici nella scena musicale che vivono qui, il che è anche una influenza. Ma di nuvo, i pensieri interiori di Peter sono la principale influenza.

Pensate di venire in Italia per un concerto nel prossimo futuro?
Se ci invitano perché no?!:) Vedremo ma per il momento non abbiamo offerte! L'Italia è uno dei nostri paesi preferiti, e non ci siamo più stati dal 2005 quindi ci manca moltissimo!

SOPHIA "The collective works 2000-2003" CD (Cyclic Law) Dopo un breve tour che ha segnato il ritorno sulla scena mondiale dopo circa 8 anni di silenzio, esce in sole 1.000 copie la summa dell'opera di Sophia, una delle band fondamentali della scena martial industrial, stesso bacino da cui sono fuoriusciti gruppi del calibro di Les Joyaux de la Princesse, Der Blutharsch e Wappenbund. Quattro cd che raccolgono tutta la discografia completa del gruppo salvo "Deconstruction of the world", già inciso sotto Cyclic Law, etichetta canadese meritevole di aver strappato alla Cold Meat Industry questo straordinario gruppo e soprattutto questo fenomenale personaggio che è Peter Bjärgö, del quale solo per elencare i progetti e gli album riempirei lo spazio dedicato a questa recensione; un nome su tutti gli Arcana, che sempre sotto Cyclic Law hanno inciso recentemente i loro primi quattro lavori, anche questi precedentemente usciti sotto CMI. Parlando della musica ci troviamo di fronte a qualcosa che per chi non li ha mai sentiti sorprende in quanto, nonostante il gruppo produca sonorità industriali, a farla da padrone è la melodia, le aperture sinfoniche estremamente evocative e naturalmente le percussioni: si apprezzano spesso intuizioni che hanno tracciato un genere e che oramai sono diventati dei classici come "Herbstwerk" o "Aus der Welt". Peter could not answer the interview, so this is Ia talking. Peter is helping out in the background;)

I never seen a live show of Sophia and I thought I had lost forever this possibility, but this project, one of the most influential in the martial industrial field, is finally reborn! What happened? Can you just track a short history of the band?
Ia (Cecilia Bjärgö) Well, we talked about it last year, that we miss performing with Sophia. After the Deconstruction of the World Peter decided that Sophia needed to be put to sleep, if not forever, then for a long period. The many changes in our personal life lead to this decision, since Arcana took up a lot of time, not to mention Tyrant (Peter’s black metal band) but most of all, our daughter Vendela. When we decided to start Sophia again, Peter invited Per Åhlund back into the band. Per was part of the first Sophia set up, and he thought it would be great to work together again. And here we are and we are already in the progress of a new album. We played our first live concert in Utrecht, NL at Summer Darkness this year, and it feel fantastic to be back on stage performing with our music.

As I understand you are re-printing all your previous works on Cyclic Law: there is one of them you particularly love? Can you talk about Sophia's works very short in order to give an overview to people that do not know the project?
The first album Sigillum Militum was made with the intension of using the songs during live performances. When Peter later made Herbstwerk and the mini cd Seduction of Madness, the songs still contained the martial drums and orchestral samplings. After that Peter felt that it was time to develop, just as he set point to develop the sound of Arcana. The album Spite and the EP Death, dumb and blind was made with a more harsh, “punkish” sound. The last album made, Deconstruction of the world, contained sound from all the albums.
To chose one of the albums Peter must say Spite, but he is also fond of Seduction of madness. I must say Herbstwerk , since the orchestral feeling to it is fantastic, but I also love the EP Death, dumb and blind.

Do you have a new incoming album ready? Can you reveal something about Sophia near future?
The next album will be harsher and more chaotic, at least the songs that are made up to this point. We have made songs together with a lot of friends and their contribution will be added. We will not say more at this point, because a lot can happen;)

What do you think about late 70's industrial scene and the changings occurred in these 40 years? What has changed in your opinion?
Most of all, to compare the 70s to now we must mention the introduction of samplings. I must say that the industrial scene has exploded in different directions, with subgenres towards all directions. We love the old industrial sound and still listens to a lot of old stuff like early Swans and Suicide. Both are very different bands, but still equally good in their own way.

I would say that Sophia is just a side of many other projects and collaborations: among these last ones there are fundamental acts like Karjalan Sissit and In Slaughter Natives: can you give us an idea of how much important has been each of them (or someone I forgot) and the people you worked with, Markus Pesonen and Jouni Havukainen?

In Slaughter Natives was the first major influence for Peter when making music with Sophia. You can hear it in the first albums and the harsh style of all the albums. Karjalan Sissit is no wonder you compare with Sophia. Make Pesonen and Peter do work together in the studio when recording the KS albums.

What about the side project that brings your name? Could you please talk about that? Which is the reason that drove you to start it?
Peter Bjärgö as a solo artist started out just the same way that Sophia started. Arcana is a project that Peter need to keep in a different way, even though he develops the sound on all albums. The songs for the Peter as a solo artist are more deep and more of his own personal inner self. He reveals more of his dark thoughts and his view on different issues that he cannot bring into Arcana. Many people find it to be the same, but believe me: it isn’t. Maybe I am partial, since I am married to Peter, but I hear major differences.

What about Arcana? Do we have to expect some new release?
Yes, we are going to release a new album next year. All songs are almost done, only the vocals left and some minor corrections. But still, it is far from 100% finished, so hold your breath. It is coming;)

You have also several projects in the metal/hardcore field. How much you are in black metal and in metal in general? What do you think about modern black metal scene and the Burzum-Mayhem period?
Peter has been into metal since early childhood (as I have as well). Black metal is not something that we listen to daily, but sometimes we end up listening to some good old black metal like Bathory and Dark Throne. Some of the newer stuff is ok, but the image around these bands tends to ridicule the music. In some way that makes us not listen to the music. When Peter was on a European tour with Gorgoroth (Peter played with Tyrant as a supporting act), Gahl did the soundcheck without corpse paint. That was far more evil and true, than the actual show in front of the audience. Maybe that shouldn’t make us stop listening to that kind of music, but we can’t find that much interest in the music anymore. Let’s hope it changes, because metal is still in our hearts=)

How much the place where you live influence your works?
I have to say much, because I know that Peter is often out walking around taking photos, exploring the surroundings and then get influenced. And we also have a lot of friends within the music scene living here, so that is also an influence. But still, the inner thoughts of Peter is the main influence.

Are you planning to come to Italy for a live show in the near future?
If we get invited, why not?!:) We’ll have to see, but for now we have no offers! Italy is one of our favourite countries, and we haven’t been there since 2005 so we really miss it!
