Intervista

Prima
di tutto, complimenti per il nuovo affascinante album: vi andrebbe
di presentare il vostro progetto ai nostri lettori con una piccola
biografia?
Agathe:
Grazie per i complimenti! Ho fondato Artesia nel 2001, in quel
momento ero da sola, e le composizioni erano costituite da tastiere
e da qualche coro. Registrai il mio primo demo, “L’Eveil de
l’Ame” nel giugno 2003 (8 titoli/38 minuti), ma la produzione
era pessima. Stavo cercando quindi un musicista per sviluppare
lo stile di Artesia; Gaelle si unì al progetto nel settembre
2003, e da lì iniziammo la nostra collaborazione. Registrammo
un altro demo, “L’Aube Morne”, nel settembre 2004 (5 titoli/20
minuti), che mandammo a diverse webzine e riviste specializzate.
Le recensioni furono piuttosto buone, così proseguimmo,
e nel settembre 2005 il nostro primo album “Hilvern” era pronto,
mancava solo l’etichetta su cui pubblicarlo. Prikosnovenie accettò
di firmare con noi, e l’album uscì a febbraio 2006. Il
nostro attuale secondo album “Chants d’Automne” è stato
pubblicato a giugno 2007.
Perchè
proprio il nome “Artesia”?
Quando
iniziai gli Artesia, lessi un libro chiamato “The Cursed Kings”,
che parlava della monarchia francese durante il 14mo secolo.
C’era un personaggio chiamato Robert d’Artois, un cavaliere
molto coraggioso ed intrepido. Avrei voluto creare un concept
album sulla sua vita, perciò scelsi un nome della band
che avesse qualche connessione con il suo nome, e trovai Artesia.
Poi abbandonai l’idea ma non il nome della band. L’Artois (Artesia
in italiano ndr) è anche un a
regione nel nord della Francia, un luogo in cui si tennero molte
battaglie.
Avete
delle basi musicali classiche oppure sviluppate le vostre composizioni
al di là degli studi che avete frequentato?
Io studio
Legge per diventare avvocato, e Gaelle studia letteratura moderna
(ci stiamo laureando), perciò niente di legato alla nostra
musica. Gaelle suona il violino da quando era molto giovane,
e ora ha raggiunto un ottimo livello (lei suona anche in una
band medievale ed in un’orchestra classica di Parigi). Per quanto
mi riguarda, ho imparato pianoforte, chitarra e canto per conto
mio, quindi non sono una musicista ‘finita’, ma il mio unico
scopo è quello di creare musica che più mi piace.
Quindi per ora le mie conoscenze sono sufficienti, ma spero
che l’esperienza ed il tempo mi diano la possibilità
di crescere sempre di più.
Guardando
I vostri booklet e la grafica in generale, mi sembra che il
colore blu sia molto importante per te…
Hai ragione, e sei la prima persona che me lo chiede! E’ il
mio colore preferito e tutte le nostre copertine sono blu, fin
dall’inizio. E’ il colore nella notte, dell’acqua e del cielo,
e penso che coincida perfettamente con il nostro stile musicale:
cupo ma sereno.
E
cosa puoi dirmi dell’influenza che hanno la natura e le foreste,
soprattutto sul vostro ultimo cd “Chants d’Automne” per il quale
hai tratto ispirazione dalla foresta di Broceliande?
La
natura ha un grande spazio nella mia vita: ho vissuto a Parigi
per molti anni, ed ho scelto di venire qui, nella Piccola Bretagna,
perché avevo bisogno di un contatto con la natura. Oggi
vivo nella foresta di Brocéliande, in un vecchio granaio
restaurato, e questo mi consente di creare musica ed immagini.
Tutti i paesaggi qui attorno sono così meravigliosi che
è facile lavorare a un progetto come Artesia; vi traggo
ispirazioni ogni giorno, ed oggi è difficile per me trascorrere
tempo in una grande città. Cerco di mostrare questi paesaggi
ai nostri ascoltatori sul nostro sito web, così che loro
possano immaginare di trovarsi qui con me, e che comprendano
esattamente cosa vogliamo descrivere nei nostri brani.
Penso
che “Chants d’Automne’ sia migliore del vostro cd di esordio:
E’ difficile spiegarlo, è più equilibrato, meglio
arrangiato, e soprattutto è più personale, al
di sopra di gruppi che possano suonare in modo simile…
Sì
sono d’accordo con te, da “Hilvern” abbiamo fatto molti progressi,
e questo è normale avendo ora una maggior maturità
ed esperienza. Sapevamo cosa non fare, gli errori da evitare
ecc. Abbiamo cercato di sviluppare il nostro proprio stile in
aggiunta a maggiori suoni celtici, ma senza creare musica folk.
Vogliamo suonare musica atmosferica ed heavenly-dark, e non
fare come altre band che suonano vera musica folk. Ci piacciono
questi gruppi, come I Trobar De Morte, ma noi vogliamo mantenere
il nostro stile.
Penso
che il nuovo album sia meno monotono e più vario anche
perché abbiam o
incluso due piccole tracce (”Entrelacs” and “Sous la lune dansante”),
differenti dalle altre, e che ci hanno permesso di creare un
break fra due brani più tristi. Speriamo di fare ancora
meglio la prossima volta!
Ovviamente
mentre ascolto la vostra musica, non è difficile trovare
similitudini ed influenze, per esempio con Dark Sanctuary, Dargaard,
Arcana, Autumn Tears…
Quanto
partimmo, eravano effettivamente un po’ ispirate da band come
i Dargaard o gli Arcana; la loro musica mi diede lo spunto per
creare la mia propria heavenly music. Oggi siamo sempre loro
fan, ma cerchiamo di sviluppare il nostro proprio stile e creare
nuove atmosfere. Vogliamo avere una nostra personalità
musicale, che arriverà con gli anni e l’esperienza. Attualmente,
ammiriamo molte band fra cui Qntal e The Moon and the Nightspirits
ma non suoniamo nello stesso stile. Ci piace variare i suoni,
anche se preferiamo il dark (dark and black metal, ambient...).
Agathe,
tu scrivi sia la musica che i testi: come inizi a comporre un
brano?
Normalmente
scrivo le basi dei brani sulle mie tastiere. Dopodiché,
cerco di trovare i giusti arrangiamenti (percussioni, chitarre...)
e per farlo ci vogliono diversi mesi. Quando tutto è
pronto, invio le tracce a Gaëlle su cd così che
lei possa trovare le linee di violino adatte. Parliamo assieme
delle nostre rispettive idee e quando siamo d’accordo su tutto,
allora registriamo l’album. Ma ci possono essere delle varianti,
ad esempio Gaëlle ha scritto “Entrelacs” da sola, ed io
spero che possa scrivere altri brani come questo per dare un
aspetto celtico all’album.
Quando
io creo un brano, ho nella mia testa alcuni paesaggi che ho
già visto, ma possono anche essere film che apprezzo,
come per esempio Sleepy Hollow, Braveheart, Il Signore Degli
Anelli, Balla Coi Lupi… Quando suono, penso sempre alle meravigliose
immagini della natura, questo mi aiuta, e penso che anche i
nostri ascoltatori possano avvertirle. Ma non è mai qualcosa
di veramente preciso, è più un feeling generico.
Cerchiamo di non ascoltare altre band atmosferiche durante il
processo compositivo perché non vogliamo esserne influenzate.
Scrivo
i testi dopo aver terminato la musica, non ho nessun riferimento
perché scrivo quello che scorre per la mia mente, ma
mi piace creare concept album. I testi sono semplici come la
musica, ma toccanti ed evocativi di quel che vogliamo esprimere.
E
non senti mai il bisogno di un aiuto nel processo compositivo?
No,
mi piace essere la principale compositrice negli Artesia perché
considero questa band una MIA creazione; è importante
per me sapere che sono in grado di creare un intero album da
sola. Ho fatto un’eccezione con Gaëlle, perché lei
collabora nel gruppo da anni e mi piacciono le sue idee e le
sue composizioni; non è un vero e proprio aiuto, è
una collaborazione fra due persone a cui piacciono le stesse
cose. E’ interessante ascoltare brani con differenze musicali
e penso che questo renda il nostro suono più attraente.
Spero che Loic Cellier (il mio ragazzo e leader della band black
metal band Belenos) che registra tutti i nostri album, potrà
creare un brano nel nostro prossimo cd.
Il
brano “Chant d’Automne” è molto evocativo, intenso, come
un sogno che diventa realtà…
Sono
d’accordo, credo che la creazione dell’album si sia conclusa
con successo. Con l’ultimo cd, abbiamo cercato di presentare
il nostro “mondo speciale”, ma è stato difficile perché
non avevamo molta esperienza. “Chants d’Automne” è esattamente
dove volevamo arrivare: un’atmosfera cupa e misteriosa ma anche
piena di speranza e di sogni.
Mentre
“Terres Perdues” e “Valsent les ombres” mi rammentato tempi
in cui l’uomo e la natura erano un’unica cosa… forse oggi abbiamo
perso questo tipo di contatto, violando tutte le cose meravigliose
che ci circondano…
Hai
ragione ma non so dirti se la gente non sia contenta nel mondo
in cui ci troviamo, perché oggigiorno ci sono molte cose
buone: possiamo combattere molte malattie, viaggiare in tutto
il mondo, imparare di altre civiltà e culture navigando
su Internet ecc. E’ difficile immaginare che si possa vivere
in un’altra era: da una parte sarebbe bello, ma dall’altra le
condizioni di vita sarebbero molto difficili.
Penso
che sempre più gente si interessi alla spiritualità
ed ai miti, poiché questi aspetti possono soddisfare
l’attuale società; ma la maggioranza delle persone sono
molto lontane da queste considerazioni, ed è un peccato
poiché non riescono a vedere quanto profonda e ricca
interiormente possa essere una vita umana.
Tutto
nell’album ha qualcosa di fatato, mistico, sia nei testi che
nei suoni… sei interessata a queste tematica, al di là
dell’aspetto musicale?
Oggigiorno, la vita è realmente difficile per i sognatori:
devi essere veloce e materialista se vuoi essere rispettato.
Non sono d’accordo con queste regole, e sento il bisogno di
pensare a cose insteressanti come la mitologia, la storia e
la spiritualità, per poter accrescere la mia vita. Quando
cerchi di apprendere questi aspetti, questi ti possono essere
d’aiuto per comprendere l’attuale modo di vivere, ed attenderne
gli sviluppi. A Gaëlle e me queste cose sono sempre piaciute
perché ci permettono di fuggire dalla “vita di tutti
i giorni”. Quando eravamo alle scuole superiori, leggevamo un
sacco di libri ed avremmo voluto visitare molti luoghi mistici
europei. Più tardi realizzammo questo sogno, e la nostra
passione per tutto questo è rimasta intatta. In realtà,
cerchiamo di imparare a scoprire gli elementi naturali, poiché
giocano un forte ruolo nella nostra musica, così come
nelle nostre vite.
Avete
mai pensato a possibili collaborazioni?
Come ho detto prima, non sono interessata a collaborazioni eccetto
che con Loic Cellier. Molte persone hanno chiesto di collaborare
con noi, questo l’ho molto apprezzato, ma penso che Artesia
debba restare una formazione limitata ed al femminile, o rischieremmo
di perdere la nostra identità.
E
cosa ne pensi di possibili concerti in Europa, in special modo
in Italia?
Effettivamente,
per il momento non suoniamo live poiché viviamo molto
lontano l’un l’altra: Gaëlle vive a Parigi per motivi di
studio, ed io vivo a Brocéliande. Non possiamo vederci
spesso, quindi è troppo difficile pianificare concerti.
E ad essere sincera, non voglio suonare dal vivo perché
penso che non sia una buona idea. La nostra musica è
creata per essere ascoltata in privato, in una stanza per conto
tuo oppure durante una passeggiata immersi nella natura. So
che alla gente piacciono i concerti, e gli dispiace di non vederci
suonare, così abbiamo provato a creare molto fotografie
(che possono essere visualizzate sul nostro sito web o su MySpace):
così, è possibile vedere il nostro aspetto, ed
i paesaggi che noi amiamo. D’altronde, sono sicura che visiterò
il vostro meraviglioso paese molto presto, io ho origini italiane
da parte di mia madre, e mi piace viaggiare in Italia!
Perchè
avete scelto la label Prikosnovenie? Siete soddisfatte del lavoro
che hanno svolto con voi?
Quando
firmammo con Prikosnovenie, non avevamo altre proposte da altre
label, quindi non è stata una vera e propria scelta!
Ma loro hanno fatto un gran bel lavoro (ci hanno lasciate libere
di scegliere l’artwork, e a loro piace molto creare edizioni
limitate) così possiamo dire di aver fatto bene ad affidar
loro la nostra musica. Ma non penso che staremo con la Prikosnovenie
anche per il prossimo album, perchè penso che sia interessante
lavorare con persone diverse, e mi piacerebbe lavorare con una
label di stampo più dark…vedremo…

First
of all, congratulations for your new enchanting album:
would you like to introduce your project to our readers
with a little biography?
Thank
you! I have founded Artesia in 2001, at this time I was
alone, and the songs were made up of keyboards and few
choirs. I recorded my first demo-cd, l’Eveil de l’Ame,
in June 2003 (8 titles/38 minutes), but the production
was very bad.
I
was looking for a musician, to develop the style of Artesia.
Gaëlle joined the band in September 2003, and we
work together since this time. We recorded another demo-cd,
l’Aube Morne, in September 2004 (5 titles/20 minutes),
and we have sent it to many webzines and magazines. The
reviews were quite good so we continued. In September
2005, our first album Hilvern was done, and we searched
for a label. Prikosnovenie accepted to sign with us. Hilvern
was out in February 2006. Our second album Chants d’Automne
is out since June 2007.
Why
the name “Artesia”?
When
I started the band, I was young and I read a book called
: the Cursed Kings, about the french monarchy during the
14th century. There was a character, named Robert d’Artois,
a very brave and intrepid knight. I would create a concept
album about his life, so I searched a band name in connection
with his name, so I have found Artesia. After, I have
abandonned the idea, but not the name. Artois is also
a region in the north of  France,
where a lot of battles took place.
Did
you have a classical mucis stock or you have developed
your compositions apart from your studies?
I
study the law to be a solicitor and Gaelle studies modern
literature ( we are in Master’s degree), so you can see
that it’s not linked to our music. Gaelle plays violin
since she is very young and now she has a very good level
(she also play in amedieval band and in a classical orchestra
in Paris). As far as I’m concerned, I have learned piano,
guitars and song alone so I’m not a really good musician
but my only aim is to create the music I want. So it’s
enough, but I hope to ,make progress with more experience
and time.
Looking
at your booklet and cover art, it seems that blue color
is important for you…
You’re
right and you’re the first person who ask me this! It
is ma favourite color and all our covers are blue since
the beginning. It’s the color of the night, of water and
sky and I think that it’s perfectly fitted to our musical
style : dark but peaceful.
And
what about the influences from natures and forests, especially
in your last album “Chants d’Automne” where you have take
inspiration from the Broceliande forest?
Nature
takes a big place in my life : I have lived in Paris during
many years, and I chosed to come here, in little Brittany
because I needed to have a contact with nature. Today
I live in Brocéliandeés forest, in an old
conversed barn, and it allows me to create songs and drawings.
All the landscapes around me are so beautiful that it’s
easier to work on a project like Artesia. It inspires
me everyday and now it’s difficult for me to spend time
in a big city. I try to show these landscapes to our listeners
on our website, so they can imagine that they are with
us, and they know exactly what we want to describe in
our songs.
I
think that “Chants d’Automne’ is even better then you
first cd: I can’t say at words, It’s more equilibrated,
better arranged, and most of all is more personal, beyond
all the other group you could hear similar
Yes
I agree with you, we have made progress since Hilvern
and it’s normal because we have more maturity and experience
now. We knew what not to do, the errors to avoid etc.
We have tried to develop our own style in adding more
celtical elements but without making folk music. We want
do play atmospheric and dark heavenly music and not to
do to like other bands who play real folk music. We like
these bands, like Trobar de Morte etc but we want to keep
our style.
I
think that our new album is less monotonous and more various
because we have included 2 little tracks (”Entrelacs”
and “Sous la lune dansante”), differents from the others
and it allows to make a break between two more sad songs.
We hope that we will make better the next time!
Obviously
when I’m listening to your music, even for me it’s not
difficult to find similar influence, for example Dark
Sanctuary, Dargaard, Arcana, Autumn Tears…
When
we started, we were a little inspired by bands like Dark
Sanctuary, Dargaard or Arcana. Their music gave me the
desire to do heavenly music by myself. Today, we are still
fans of these bands but we try to develop our own style
and to create new atmospheres. We want to have a particular
musical personality and it will come with the years and
experience.
Currently,
we admire a lot of bands, like Qntal, The Moon and the
Nightspirit but we don’t play the same musical style.
We enjoy diversity,even if we prefer dark music (dark
and black metal, ambient..).
Agathe,
you write both text and music: how do you start to compose
a song?
Generally,
I write the basis of the songs with my keyboard. After
that, I try to find the arrangements (percussions, guitars...)
and it takes several months. When all is ready, I send
the tracks to Gaëlle on a cd-r and she can work to
find the violin lines. We talk about our respective ideas
together and when we agree about everything, then we record
all the album. But it can be different, for example, Gaëlle
has written “Entrelacs” all alone, and I hope that she
will make another songs like that because it give a celtical
colour to the album.
When
I create a song, I have in my head some landscapes I have
already seen, but it can also be movies I like, for example
Sleepy Hollow, Braveheart, LOTR, Dance with wolfes...I
always think about beautiful images of nature when I play
music, it helps me and I think that our listeners can
feel it.But it’s never something very precise, it’s more
like a general feeling. We try to not hear other atmospherical
bands during the composition because we don’t want to
be influenced by them.
I
write the lyrics when the music is done, I don’t have
any reference, because I write what come in my head but
I enjoy doing concept albums. The lyrics are simple like
the music, but moving and evocatives of what we want to
express.
And,
don’t you feel the need of an help in composing?
No,
I like to be the main composer in Artesia because I consider
this band like MY creation. It’s important for me to know
that I’m able to create an entire album by myself. But
I make an exception about Gaëlle, because she is
invested in the band since many years and I like her ideas
and compositions. It’s not like a real help, it’s a collaboration
between two persons who like the same things. It’s interesting
to hear various songs and I think that it makes our music
more attractive. I hope that Loic Cellier (my boyfriend
and leader of the black metal band Belenos) who records
all our albums, will make a song for us in the next album.
“Chant
d’Automne” is very evocative, intense, like a dream that
comes true…
I
agree with you, I think that this album is more successful.
With our last records, we tried to present our spcial
world but it was difficult because we did not had a lot
of experience. Chants d’Automne is exactly what we wanted
to create : a dark and mysterious atmosphere but full
of hope and dream.
While
“Terres Perdues” and “Valsent les ombres” remind me at
a time when man and nature were a single one… maybe today
we lost this kind of contact, violating the more beautiful
things all around us…
You’re
right but we can’t say that we are unhappy with the present
world because there is a lot of good things today : we
can fight against illness, we can travel all over the
world, we can learn about others civilizations and cultures
by surfing on the internet etc...
It’s
hard to imagine that you live in another era : on the
one hand it could be great but on the other hand the life
conditions were very hard.
I
think that more and more people interest themselves to
spirituality and myths, because they can be satisfied
with the present society. But most of them are very far
from these considerations, and it’s a pity because they
can not see how deep and enriching a human life can be.
Everything
in the album has something elvery, mystical, both in text
and in music… are you interested in these themes, apart
for your music?
Today,
life is really difficult for dreaming people : you have
to be rapid and materialist if you want to be respected.
I don’t agree with these rules, and I need to think about
interesting things like mythology, history and spirituality
to progress in my own life. When you try to learn all
these things, it can help you to understand the current
way of life and to stand back. Gaëlle and me have
always liked it because it allows us to escape from
“everyday life”. When we were in high school, we
read a lot of books and we wanted to visit a lot of mystic
places in Europe. Later we have realized this dream, and
our passion for all of this is always intact.
In
real, we try to learn and discover a maximum of elements,
cause it can play a role in our music, as in our lives.
Have
you ever thinking about possible collaborations?
As
I said before, I’m not interested in a collaboration except
with Loic Cellier. Many people asked for work with us,
and I appreciate their propositions but I think that Artesia
must stay a limited and female formation, or we will take
the risk of losing our identity.
And
what about possibile concerts in Europe, and especially
in Italy?
In
fact, we don’t play live for the moment because we live
very far from each other : Gaëlle lives in Paris,
for her studies, and I live in Brocéliande. We
cannot repeat together so it is too difficult to plan
a concert. And to be honest, I don’t want to play live
because I think that it will sound bad. Our music is made
to be listen in private, in your room or alone during
a walk in nature. I know that people enjoy concerts and
are disappointed not to see us, so we try to realize a
lot of pictures (you can see them on our website, or myspace).
Then, they can see how we look like, and also the landscapes
that we love.Besides, I ‘m sure that I will come in your
beautiful country very soon, I have Italian origins by
my mother and I like to travel in Italy!
Why
did you choice Prikosnovenie? Are you satisfied with their
work with you?
When we signed with Prikosnovenie, we haven’t no proposition
from other labels so we don’t have really chosen to work
with them. But they make a really good job (they let us
choose our artwork, and they like to do limited editions)
so we are satisfied to confide them our music. But I don’t
think that we will stay on Prikosnovenie for our next
albums because I think that it’s interesting to work with
different people, and I would like to work with a more
dark label. We will see...
I
